Description

Victoria gold Proof 5 Pounds 1893 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM787, S-3872. With just 773 issued, the 1893 Proof Set was introduced to celebrate Thomas Brock's new 'widow head' portrait of Victoria - her final portrait featured on British coinage, in use until her death in 1901. In recent years, the popularity for this set has soared with the Proof 5 Pounds attracting particular attention in any grade, and the visual appeal of this present specimen offers a clear explanation why. Its fields, perfect mirrors with exceedingly few hairlines, Victoria's portrait and the reverse scene of St. George slaying the dragon thickly frosted providing the beloved Proof contrast; only 5 examples have been graded higher than this gem specimen by either NGC or PCGS, and when viewing this incredible piece in hand, it is hard to believe that any can exceed its quality. A near-perfect representative of this much-coveted variety and firmly deserving of a place amongst other superb British rarities in a premium collection.
