Description

George III gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1817 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM673, S-3786, W&R-204 (R4). A superlative Proof, produced in the height of the Great Recoinage when pride was restored in British coin engraving, and the then-current lackluster designs were overhauled to herald the introduction of such masterpieces as the present offering. Its fields dual mirrors bearing only light hairlines (in line with the grade) but no further distractions, center devices luxuriously frosted and bold; a piece struck to an impeccable standard and designed to impress the viewer, a feat it manages effortlessly. Proofs of Record allow an entirely different appreciation of a given coinage variety, wherein the design that numismatists are quite familiar with as a business strike takes on a singular appearance and quality, cumulating in a beauty so intense and surprising that it takes ones' breath away. Premium for the grade and extremely rare, an outstanding numismatic jewel and certainly one for the connoisseur.
