Description

George III gold "Military" Guinea 1813 MS64 NGC, KM664, S-3730. Tied for highest certified, an exceptional representative of this one-year issue. With just 80,000 of this type produced, and as a coinage of necessity, each piece was essentially guaranteed to circulate and thus generate wear. Accordingly, most examples which enter the market reside around the XF level, with AU and low MS examples very rare. The present offering is clearly a cut above, with fully glossy fields lightly toned an intense orange at the peripheries; the strike is so definitive that it has lent bold relief to the somewhat flat engraving of George's laureate head. To call this piece "prooflike" would almost be unfair, as the cataloger is in the unique position to compare this specimen to its Proof counterpart in-hand, and can safely express that it bears its own charm as a business strike in this lofty of a grade. Unbeatable for the type and with truly wondrous eye appeal, an exquisite Guinea which cannot fail to please even the most perfectionist collector.
