Description

Maximian, First Reign (AD 286-310). AR aureus (20mm, 4.95 gm 11h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 287. MAXIMIA-NVS P F AVG, laureate head of Maximian right / VIRT-VS AVGG, Hercules standing right, kneeling on the rump of the Ceryneian Hind, which he seizes by its golden antlers; vertical club to left, PR in exergue. RIC –. Cohen 595. Biaggi 1802. Calicó 4736. Depeyrot 5B/7. From the Morris Collection. Ex Leu 93, (10 May 2005), lot 120; Christie's, (15 June 1971), lot 87. A choice depiction of the third labor of Hercules, the capture of the Hind of Ceryneia. Ceryneia was a town in Greece, about fifty miles from Eurystheus' palace in Mycenae. Hercules tracked the beast for an entire year until it finally tired and laid down on the mountain Artemisius, near the river Ladon. There are different versions of what happened next, one being Hercules captured it while it rested, put it on his shoulders and walked back to Mycenae.
