Description

Carausius (AD 286/7-293). BI antoninianus (25mm, 3.57 gm, 7h). NGC Good 4/5 - 1/5, plugged. Camulodunum (Colchester), AD 292-293. CARAVSIVS ET FRATRES SVI, jugate, radiate and cuirassed busts of Carausius, Diocletian and Maximian left / PAX AVGGG, Pax standing facing, head left, olive branch upward in right hand, vertical scepter in left; S-P across fields, C in exergue. RIC V.II 1. From the Morris Collection. Ex Oman Collection. Carausius produced this very rare series of jugate portraits in an effort to convince Diocletian and Maximian to legitimize his rule in Britain, but it ultimately proved futile.
