Description

Pacatian (usurper, AD 248-249). AR antoninianus (21mm, 4.81 gm, 2h). NGC VF S 4/5 - 5/5. Viminacium, AD 248. IMP TI CL MAR PACATIANVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Pacatian right, seen from behind / ROMAE AETER AN MIL ET PRIMO, Roma seated left on shield, Victory with wreath in right hand, spear in left. RIC IV.III 6. Exceptionally nice for issue. From the Morris Collection. Ex. Munzen & Medaillen 66 (22 November 1984), lot 805; Leu 18 (5 May 1977), lot 374. An interesting and rare reverse type dating the coin to the 1001st year of Rome, 753 BC - AD 248. The reverse legend translates as "To eternal Rome, the one thousand and first year". Only a handful of Roman Imperial coins actually state the year of issue in direct terms.
