Description

Theodosius I, Eastern Roman Empire (AD 379-395). AV solidus (21mm, 4.44 gm, 1h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5, brushed. Constantinople, 2nd officina, AD 378-383. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Theodosius I right, seen from front / CONCORDI-A AVGGGG B, Constantinopolis enthroned facing on throne ornamented with lion heads, helmeted head right, right foot on prow, scepter in right hand, shield in left inscribed with VOT / V / MVL / X; CONOB in exergue. RIC IX 47b2. This scarce variety with four Gs on the reverse denotes the four reigning Augusti, Gratian, Theodosius I, Valentinian II, and the young Arcadius. The coin must have been struck after Arcadius' acclamation on January 16 but before Gratian's assassination in Lyon on August 25, thus placing it within a brief seven-month period.
