CENTRAL EUROPE. The Vindelici. Ca. 2nd-1st centuries BC. AV quarter-stater (9mm, 1.98 gm). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 2/5, brushed. Raised convex circle / Cross within deep concave circular incuse punch. De la Tour 9454. Rare. Although the obverse is described as blank, this type typically shows evidence of a Celticized male head that has been mostly obliterated. The Vindelici occupied a broad region encompassing modern northeastern Switzerland, southeastern Baden, and southern Bavaria. They were subjugated by Tiberius circa 15 BC and remained within the Roman Empire, incorporated into the province of Raetia, even after the Germanic revolt of AD 9. They are regarded as a Celtic tribe, although other groups to the north and south are considered Germanic. HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
