Description

Transvaal. Republic gold "Fine Beard" Burgers Pond 1874 UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Heaton mint, KM1.2, Fr-1, Hern-B1. 7.88gm. Mintage: 695. By Leonard Wyon. A more attainable representative of this iconic South African type, offered with little to no signs of handling to the long-ago cleaned and now re-toned surfaces. A storied rarity from the South African series, standing as the nation's first Pond issue. Produced as part of President Thomas François's program to unite the country behind a new gold coinage and exploit the recent discovery of local ore in the last 1860s, his effort was ultimately in vain, owing to pronounced disapproval for the use of the President's own portrait. Nevertheless, many pieces found subsequent use in jewelry as objects of personal adornment. HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
