Araucania-Patagonia. New France bronze Proof Piefort Fantasy Peso 1874 PR63 Brown NGC, KM-X12 var (normal thickness). A rare double thickness fantasy issue produced for Araucanía and Patagonia in southern Argentina and Chile. Wrapped in beautiful scarlet, amethyst, and cobalt tones, just shy of the top pop at NGC. The French lawyer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens declared himself king of the region in 1860 but was arrested by the Chilean army and deported to France two years later where he died, impoverished, in 1878.
