Western Han Dynasty. Wu Zhu bronze Mold ND (From 113 BC), Shanghai Museum-80, cf. Hartill-8.8 (for coin); Rim above hole. 240x100mm. 1449.23gm. Long ago repaired, this hefty mold has encrusted crevices but still clear, discernible features. A fascinating piece of Ancient Chinese numismatic history. These coins usually have a raised rim on top of the obverse hole. Their quality was so high that forgery became unprofitable. All earlier coins were to be melted down.
