British India. Edward VII Proof Pattern Rupee 1901 PR63 PCGS, Calcutta mint, KM-Pn67, S&W-7.1, Prid-1045. A scarcer Pattern variety from the early Edward Rupee series, produced from dies prepared by F.K. Wezel at the Calcutta mint, the design ultimately rejected by the Royal mint due to what they deemed as unremarkable character and shoddy engraving. Unlike the Restrikes of these Patterns, the motifs on the piece at hand are indisputably crisp and well-preserved. A most interesting patina of caramel and azure has set in to the surfaces, further elevating the aesthetic in hand. Tied with one other Specimen for the highest grade at PCGS with one PR65 ranked higher at NGC. A fabulous find for the more esoteric Pattern collector.
