Description

George III silver Proof Pattern "Three Graces" Crown 1817 PR63+ NGC, KM-PnA77, L&S-152, ESC-2020 (R2). Plain edge. By William Wyon. Universally renowned as one of the most illustrious types in the British series, the 1817 silver "Three Graces" Pattern Crown hardly necessitates an introduction. Of the 50 "Three Graces" Patterns estimated to have been produced, this representative ranks among the most superior specimens extant. The raised effigy and eponymous devices stand fully endowed and resolute, carrying a mature pewter frost that arguably forms a Cameo contrast with the encircling polychromatic waters. Cerulean, amethyst, magenta, and cognac hues are unleashed in the fields during in-hand inspection, furthering this "ocean and island" effect. Despite being obscured by the concentrated patina, the occasional instance of handling, including a more pronounced mark under George's sideburn, confirm the Choice grade bestowed by NGC. Yet, as the grading service evaluation also suggests, this example is at the cusp of a finer designation, a fact that we expect to be taken into consideration when the lot crosses the block. A Crown that offers inspiration and beauty at every turn, one that will undoubtedly warrant the focus of many a quality-concerned collector. Recognized as the zenith of numismatic artistry under George III, the design marks the entry of William Wyon as a tour-de-force at the Royal Mint, who offered a more Hellenistic engraving style compared to the mannerist hand of Benedetto Pistrucci. Here, Wyon reimagines the United Kingdom through a quintessentially neoclassical lens. Harkening to Greek mythology, he anthropomorphizes England, Ireland, and Scotland as the Three Graces standing intertwined as a cohesive unit, a physicality symbolizing the "Unbreakable Treaty" from which the United Kingdom draws its sovereignty.
