Description

Republic Yuan Shih-kai gold 10 Dollars Year 8 (1919) MS64 PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Y330, L&M-1030, Kann-1531, Shih-A4-2, Hsu-16, WS-0059, Wenchao-36 (rarity 3 stars), Shanghai Museum-14, Shi Jiagan Collection-4. Regarded as one of China's rare modern-era gold coins, the 1919 10 Dollar coin at hand marks Financial Minister Tsao Yu-lin's ambitious initiative to reintroduce a gold standard in the country. Despite the noble intent, the endeavor unfortunately fell through. Consequently, an already limited supply of 10 and 20 Dollar coins essentially vanished from circulation, and the surviving pieces often bear the scars of rough handling and poor preservation. However, the coin we have here defies these odds and tells a different story. Displaying the qualities akin to a coin minted from fresh dies, the present offering carries a distinct, even a touch Prooflike surfaces replete with fine die polish. This commendable piece arrives on the market having undergone private purchase several decades ago. Preserved by a dedicated single owner over the years, it finally takes its turn under the spotlight. The near-absolute paucity of significantly detracting marks and the stately, practically untouched and satiny finish serve as evidence of diligent care. Per the current PCGS census records, this coin shares its technical grade with only one other and is surpassed by a lone example. It is safe to conclude the selection at hand certainly stands with the finest of its kind extant, vastly outshining the specimen in the famed Norman Jacobs Collection, which only managed an AU58 certificate. We further note this treasure is conditionally superior to the MS63 PCGS example from the illustrious Tony Ma Collection we sold in July 2022, which realized $162,000. As such, this handsome representative of numismatic artistry is well-suited for an elite-tier cabinet and warrants advanced consideration for a premium bid from discerning collectors.
