Republic Yuan Shih-kai "Plumed Hat" Dollar ND (1916) AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Y332, L&M-942, Kann-663, WS-0097. Struck for the inauguration of Yuan Shih-kai as Emperor Hung-hsien. Of the two "Plumed Hat" varieties, those with the intricate "Flying Dragon" reverse design are decidedly more difficult to locate and highly covetable as such. The strike is expectedly bold, and his facing portrait is partly silhouetted with faint developing blues of the night, surrounded by lightly mottled open expanses that admit few instances of impact. Turning to reverse, the overall patination is more pronounced and is supported by gentle underlying luminosity. The eponymous dragon is attractively rendered and remains expressive, professing only a hint of friction and hardly a mark of consequence. Considered overall, the offering at hand presents an inviting opportunity for the ambitious collector of Chinese Republican issues. Sold with an endearing old envelope, postmarked with a 2 Annas red service stamp and postmarked Bombay, 23-11-54; with a description of the coin written in script on the reverse.
