Charles II gold "Elephant & Castle'' 5 Guineas 1682 XF Details (Scratch) PCGS, KM444.2, S-3332. Second laureate bust, QVARTO edge. Elephant and castle variety. Bearing the symbols of the Royal African Company, indicating a likely source of the gold as Guinea, whence comes the name of the denomination. Despite the partial denticulation and conspicuous circulation wear, this is among the more attractive offerings–which are admittedly few–that have surfaced at auction over the past twenty years. Abrasions of the sort that warranted the Details designation are common for the type. Purchased privately from Baldwin's in 2009 HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
