Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysius I (405-367 BC). AR tetradrachm (24mm, 17.31 gm, 1h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Unsigned dies in the style of Eucleidas, ca. 400/395-390 BC. Charioteer driving unruly quadriga left, kentron in right hand, reins in both; Nike flying right above, crowning charioteer with wreath held in both hands, dolphin left in exergue / ΣYPAKOΣIΩN, head of Arethusa left, hair in wide ampyxes, upswept at temple and flying loosely upward behind, wearing double-loop earring and plain necklace with frontal pendant; four dolphins swimming around.
