South Peru. Republic gold 8 Escudos 1838 CUZCO-MS MS62 PCGS, Cuzco mint, KM171, Fr-92. A legendary Latin American "Sunface" design, from an era of which there are many stunning options to choose from. The enchanting aforementioned obverse is accompanied by an almost equally alluring reverse that features a castle and a volcano, side-by-side, next to a ship on the ocean scene. This magical imagery can be fully appreciated on a Mint State example such as this, though there is some notable granularity (as made) and softness in the central part of the obverse design. Flashy luster and banana-yellow surfaces create a level of visual appeal that likely exceeds this coin's technical designation. Though both grading services have certified quite a few examples in higher grade, this is still an issue that is very scarce in Mint State, and one that Peruvian collectors seek to obtain with passion.
