Meiji gold 20 Yen Year 9 (1876) MS64 Deep Prooflike NGC, Osaka mint, KM-Y13, JNDA 01-1, JC-09-1. Mintage: 954. A mammoth rarity of the Japanese series whose paltry mintage figures account for the extreme popularity and paucity of auction appearances in the last few decades. These "old type" 20 Yen issues, of which only four dates exist, are among the most sought-after numismatic items and find themselves keenly pursued in any condition. The current offering is only one of a small handful currently certified, bested only by a single specimen in technical designation only and is likely the finest to come to market in years, the last of which being an MS62DPL offering in 2018. Distinguished by seemingly endless mirrors as a result of a careful strike produce near-medallic features that project boldly towards the viewer, fully frosted and deserving of its assigned Deep Prooflike designation. Only the scattered contact mark withholds the piece from achieving true Gem status, but will ultimately do little to dissuade the quality-conscious collector.
