Papal States. Clement XI gold "San Giovanni Basilica" Medal Anno XVIII (1718) AU58 NGC, Miselli-113, Lincoln-Unl. By Ermenegildo Hamerani. 34.40gm. A spectacular gold medal commemorating the redesign of the Basilica of St. John Lateran. 18th Century (and prior) Papal Medals struck in gold are very scarce and are hotly contested upon each auction appearance, especially those (like the current offering) that managed to avoid damage over the centuries. Papal medals of this period are often incredibly detailed in their design execution and this example is no exception. A scattering of light marks from ever-so gentle handing account for the AU58 grade point. HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
