George III platinum Proof Restrike Penny 1807-Dated PR62 PCGS, Peck-1351 (R98), cf. W&R-160 (R7) (gold Restrike). By William J. Taylor after Küchler. An offering which has been passed down from one foremost numismatic collector to another, and yet information around the strike remains scant across the major references and catalogs. Believed to be a unique strike in platinum, a statistic that cannot be confirmed nor denied but has been aired in almost every catalog to witness the specimen, this offering traces its origins to one William J. Taylor, famed Victorian coin dealer who managed to acquire many of the original Soho Mint dies in the mid-1850's and set about using them to strike his own pieces for the benefit of collectors. Admitting only remnants of die rust along the raised motifs amid thick ranks of die polish created as a result of Taylor's efforts to refurbish the old dies, the flan is wholly impressive to behold in hand. As alluded to by the Proof designation, steely flash becomes the design, where George and his companion Britannia stand fully composed amongst this chromatic cacophony. In summation, a totally tempting offering with a handsome pedigree awaiting its next addition. Ex.
