James II gold "Mary of Modena" Coronation Medal ND (1685) MS61 NGC, Eimer-274, MI-606/7. 34mm. 21.30gm. By J. Roettier. Struck on the coronation of the second wife of James II. A celebrated emission and one encountered in gold once every year or so, struck from a fairly miniscule mintage of just 100 pieces. Despite the fairly shallow strike, all details are fully rendered upon the glistening, aurous planchet beneath. Precluded from advanced conditional assignments by the handful of wisps most prominent to the open expanses, the piece retains the majority of its original appeal and will certainly land in a specialist's collection. Accompanied by an old collector's tag. Privately purchased from A.H. Baldwin in the early 1920s for £6/10s HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
