Description

PARTHIAN KINGDOM. Artabanus VI (ca. AD 212-224/7). AR drachm (19mm, 2.88 gm, 1h). NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5 Ecbatana mint. Bust of Artabanus VI left, with forked beard, wearing domed tiara with earflap, double banded diadem with double loop, and spiral torque; dotted border / Corrupted and partially retrograde Greek legend, Archer (Arsakes I) seated right on throne, holding bow; monogram below bow. Cf. Sellwood 89.1 (obverse)/90.1 (reverse) (Artabanus IV). Cf. Shore 464 (obverse)/467 (reverse) (Artabanus IV). Cf. Sunrise 461 (obverse)/462 (reverse). Holder notes that this type is also attributed to Artabanus IV. Note - there is a great deal of conflicting information about the various Parthian Artabanus kings. The website Parthia.com, along with Fred Shore, list Artabanus I (127-124 BC); Artabanus II (AD 10-38); Artabanus III (AD 80-90); and Artabanus IV (AD 216-224). The Sunrise Collection, published in 2011, lists Artabanus I (Arsakes II) (211-185 BC); Artabanus II (127-126 BC); Artabanus III (126-122 BC); Artabanus IV (ca. AD 10-38); Artabanus V (AD 79/80-ca. 85); and Artabanus VI (AD 212-224/7). HID09801242017 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
