Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (20mm, 6h). NGC Fine, bankers marks. Spanish mint (Colonia Caesaraugusta?), ca. 19-18 BC. CAESAR-AVGVSTVS, bare head of Augustus right / S•P•Q•R / CL•V, legend in two lines on round shield. RIC 42a. The Clipeus Virtutis, Latin for "Shield of Valor", depicted on the reverse of this coin, was a golden shield awarded by the Roman Senate to Augustus for his "courage, clemency, justice and piety" and displayed in the Curia Julia.
