Kings of All England. Eadgar (959-975) Penny ND (959-972) AU Details (Bent) NGC, cf. S-1138, N-750. 1.39gm. Pre-reform coinage. Baldwin as moneyer. +EADGAR REX, crowned bust right in the S.E. England regional style. +BALDVVIN MONETA, small cross pattée within inner circle with three pellets to the right. Only twelve portrait coins of this Monarch are recorded with the Medieval Coin Corpus (EMC) in the Fitzwilliam Museum and in the famous book on the period 'Coinage in 10th Century England', none with this moneyer and privy mark. An example is mentioned in 'North', probably this coin. Extremely rare with no other examples of this "triple pellet" privy mark found. An exciting coin for which the mint location will hopefully one day be discovered. Ex. Hudson Collection
