Republic gold 8 Escudos 1855/2 QUITO-GJ AU58 PCGS, Quito mint, KM34.1, Fr-8, Onza-1774. A diamond in the rough for this conditionally scarce type. Confident legends are tempered by the typical central weakness, though we note the devices are fuller than the MS62 we sold last year. Cleaned some time ago, the planchet has retoned with an atmospheric amber and olive patina, accompanied by mostly unobtrusive plum and navy blue veining on the obverse. The finest at PCGS, with only 2 Mint State representatives at NGC, we expect this piece to find its way into a cultivated cabinet.
