Description

CARIAN SATRAPS. Maussollus (ca. 377-352 BC). AR tetradrachm (24mm, 15.18 gm, 12h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5. Laureate, draped bust of Apollo, facing slightly right / ΜΑΥΣΣΩΛΛΟ, Zeus Labraundus standing right, lotus tipped spear in left hand, bipennis raised in right. SNG Copenhagen 590. SNG von Aulock -. Nicely centered with khaki and peach toning within the recesses to highlight the artistic design. The Hecatomnid dynasty was founded under Hecatomnus in the early 4th century who introduced a new series of coinage featuring the beloved statue of Zeus from the temple at Labraunda.
