Description

MYSIA. Cyzicus. Ca. 500-450 BC. EL stater (19mm, 15.72 gm). NGC VF 4/5 - 4/5. Eagle standing left, wings open, pecking at tunny fish below / Quadripartite incuse square punch. Greenwell 151. Von Fritze I 94. Rosen -. Very rare, less than five known. A gentle yellow patina with touches of toning. Ex A Bavarian collection, acquired prior to the 1990s, (Nomos, Auction 23 (30 November 2021), lot 122 The obverse of this type likely was derived from the coinage of Sinope, with whom Cyzicus was a trading partner.
