George II gold Guinea 1745 AU58 NGC, KM577.4, S-3679, Farey-0885. A scarce Guinea according to Farey's reference system, and carrying the LIMA mark signifying it was in all likelihood minted from gold captured by a consortium of English privateers from French treasure ships Louis Erasmus and Marquis d'Antin in the North Atlantic, laden with Spanish Peruvian silver and gold in their cargo. With substantial brilliance and little actual wear across the King's laureate and intricately curled bust, supported by the rich yellow-gold and amber fields. On the reverse the Hanoverian shield is equally pleasing and complete, some dotted light haymarks and a dark spot noted for accuracy. A wonderful and historically important selection for the discerning Guinea collector. Ex. Samuel King Collection (Spink Auction 173 May 2005, Lot 175 From the Mac and Rob Woodside Collection
