Schaumburg-Pinneberg. Ernst III 2 Taler ND (c. 1606) MS62 NGC, Altona mint, KM38, Dav-LS472, Wilmersdörffer-Unl., Popken Collection-Unl., Vogel Collection-1582. 58.63gm. A remarkable relic of this already challenging German Countship. Although the Standard Catalog of World Coins generally makes few comments about the rarity of the coins from Schaumburg-Pinneburg, a quick review of sales records from the last two decades suggests as few as five emissions across all denominations having sold at auction--the largest of those being a 1/2 Taler sold as part of the Popken Collection in February 2014. Saved from the damages of circulation, this offering retains a laudable degree of detail, its strike definitive--although evidence of a flip-over double strike can be seen towards the end of the obverse (reverse as holdered) legend--and devoid of serious weakness as a sunset patina graces the scene of the mounted rider.
