Description

Marcus Aurelius, as Augustus (AD 161-180). AR denarius (19mm, 12h). NGC Choice XF. Rome, AD 166. M ANTONINVS AVG ARM-PARTH MAX, laureate head of Marcus Aurelius right / TR P XX IMP-IIII-COS III, Victory standing right, palm in right hand, left hand on shield inscribed VIC-PAR set on palm tree. RIC III 163. This reverse type commemorates the Roman victory in the Parthian War of 161-166, in which Marcus Aurelius' co-emperor Lucius Verus led the Roman forces which sacked the two biggest cities of the Parthian Empire, Seleucia on the Tigris and the capital of Ctesiphon. The sack of Seleucia was so severe that the great city never recovered, falling into obscurity within a few generations.
