Tortola. British Colony Countermarked 2 Shillings ND (1/4 Dollar) (1805-1824) F2 NGC, KM6, Prid-9. 6.174gm. Host: Cut 1/4 Charles III 8 Reales. Counterstamp: Type II "TIRTILA" (VF Details). A lesser seen denomination from this popular countermarked series. According to Pridmore, the type II and III countermarks were adopted by a private merchant after 1805, when the official 1801 issue was demonetized. The "Tirtila" misspelling was purposely done to avoid legal complications such as the charge of forgery. Such stamps were freely accepted and circulated until withdrawn in 1892.
