Description

Haile Selassie I gold Mule Werk EE 1921 (1928) MS62 NGC, Addis Ababa mint, cf. KM-Pn8 (obverse), Gill-RT8. Plain edge. This rare type is a gold off-metal Pattern, struck from the obverse die made for a Pattern silver 1/8 Birr (RT2) and the reverse die used for the Menelik 1/32 Birr. According to Gill, the weight of the type fluctuates between 4.18gm and 8.35gm according to the thickness of the planchet (not noted on holder). Gill also notes that all of the pieces appear to be struck from rusty dies, leaving the coins with "small raised pimples or blotches", a feature displayed by this offering.
