Constantine IX Monomachus (AD 1042-1055). AV/EL tetarteron nomisma (18mm, 4.02 gm, 5h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5, edge scuff. Constantinople. +IhS XIS RЄX RЄϚNANTIhM (first h retrograde), bust of Christ facing, wearing plain nimbus cruciger, pallium and colobium, right hand raised in benediction, book of Gospels in left; single border / + Cwh-AhT-hOS ILЄ m, bust of Constantine IX facing, wearing crown with pendilia and jeweled chlamys with collar, transverse labarum in right hand, globe surmounted by pelleted cross in left; single border. Sear 1833. Constantine's family name Monomachus means "lone warrior" and was adopted by one of his descendants, the Russian Grand Prince of Kiev Vladimir II Monomakh.
