Description

THRACE. Byzantium. Ca. 2nd-1st centuries BC. AV stater (19mm, 8.34 gm, 1h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5. Late posthumous issue in name and types of Lysimachus, period of the 1st Mithradatic War, 88-86 BC. Diademed head of deified Alexander III right, with horn of Ammon / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛYΣΙΜΑΧΟY, Athena enthroned left, Nike in outstretched right hand crowning name, left arm resting on grounded shield decorated with gorgoneion head boss, transverse spear beyond; ΦK monogram below right arm, BY on throne, filleted trident left in exergue. Müller 171. Shimmering fields with crisp devices accented by mellow toning.
