Transvaal. Republic aluminum Proof Pattern "Burgers" 5 Shillings (Crown) 1874 PR64 Cameo NGC, KM-XPn5a, Hern-T7. Reeded edge. A thoroughly intriguing example of this Pattern issue, with the majority of these in other metal and edge combinations having estimated mintages in the single and double digits. We've had the rare pleasure of handling just a single other aluminum specimen in the last two years, albeit a plain edge variety. Reportedly more of a salesman sample than a true Pattern for prospective coinage, but regardless of its original intent, the product remains a charming relic. Boasting highly reflective expanses laying host to a lightly frosted, cameoed bust of president Thomas Burgers and reverse arms, precluded from a lofty gem designation by the scattered instances of trivial haymarking. As is stands, the piece at hand is the finest certified aluminum specimen, and tied among all combinations of Pattern 5 Shillings at NGC and thus is deserving of special attention from the South African specialist.
