Carol II gold "Galbenul Mare" Medallic 12 Ducat 1939 UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Bucharest mint, KMX-MG1. Mintage: 95. Wreath reverse. Engraved by E.W. Becker. A substantial gold issue struck during the reign of Carol II on the centennial of the birth of his grand-uncle, Carol I, just one year prior to his forced abdication. This immense piece depicts the monarch on horseback, with a thoroughly pleasing reverse of Romulus, Remus, and She-Wolf. A popular image in Romania culture, so much so that five statues of this very scene were gifted by Italy to Romania and proudly displayed throughout the country. Aside from light hairlines, this striking piece maintains a palpable, visual allure, lending an almost matte-like appearance. An offering that endures as an especially scarce emission from one of the hardest dates to collect across all Romanian issues, and with so few of this type coming to market in recent decades, is most deserving of additional collector focus.
