"Centenary of the Capture of Trinidad" gold Proof Medal ND (1897) PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, Eimer-1809b, BHM-3623 (R). 39mm. A rare unsigned type in gold, produced to commemorate Sir Ralph Abercrombie's command of an expedition against the French in the 1790s and his subsequent capture of St. Lucia and Trinidad, establishing British control over the island, which was confirmed by the Peace of Amiens in 1802. Brown suggests that these medals were likely produced on Trinidad and were originally sold with a certificate signed by the honorary secretary of the Trinidad Centenary Celebration Committee. A fine commemorative specimen boasting impressive reliefs.
