Saint Thomas and Prince Banco Nacional Ultramarino 10,000 Reis 2.1.1897 Pick 5 PMG Choice Very Fine 35. An allegorical vignette of agriculture is seen at the top left of this large sized note, with Mercury to the right. This Island nation saw 500 years of Portuguese rule, and only gained independence in 1975. During the 19th century the Island saw increased prosperity, due to the introduction of the Cocoa trade. A handwritten date and Bank Manager signatures are observed. Perforated on both sides and an embossed "Lisboa" Seal II over watermark. This is the sole graded example on the PMG Population Report, and we have been unable to find any past sale reference of this type in any format. Stains are mentioned, but do not detract from this otherwise bright example, it is hard to believe that that this note has survived in this state given the climate of the region. Extremely rare, and an acquisition that might never again be replicated.
