Description

LOWER DANUBE. Imitating Thasos. Ca. 2nd-1st centuries BC. AR tetradrachm (36mm, 11h). ANACS VF 35. Head of Dionysus right, crowned with ivy, wearing mitra / ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΘΑΣΙΩΝ (corrupted, with pellets forming each letter), Heracles standing facing, head left, lion skin made of pellets in left hand, resting right hand on club covered in pellets. Cf. HGC 6, 358 (for prototype). Cf. SNG Copenhagen 1040-5 (for prototype).
