Arcadius, Eastern Roman Empire (AD 383-408). AV solidus (21mm, 4.46 gm, 6h). NGC AU 5/5 - 4/5, light marks. Constantinople, 9th officina, 16 January-25 August AD 383. D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Arcadius right, seen from front / CONCORDI-A AVGGGG Θ, Constantinopolis seated facing on throne ornamented with lion heads, helmeted head right, scepter in right hand, globe in left; ship's prow resembling eagle forepart left at base of throne, CONOB in exergue. RIC IX 46g4. Rare. Lustrous and with a lovely youthful portrait. This scarce variety with four Gs on the reverse denotes the four reigning Augusti, Gratian, Theodosius I, Valentinian II, and the young Arcadius. The coin must have been struck after Arcadius' acclamation on January 16 but before Gratian's assassination in Lyon on August 25, thus placing it within a brief seven-month period.
