João V gold 12800 Reis (Dobra) 1728-M AU58 NGC, Minas Gerais mint, KM139, LMB-284, cf. Guimaraes-1728-6a (different obverse). Fleur-de-Lis over diagonal edge. Cross with double bars variety. A die combination absent from Guimaraes' book, where a different obverse was matched with 6a variety's whimsical reverse where the cross on top of the crown was seemingly re-engraved with thicker bars, giving the impression of a doubled cross. Showing detailed motifs and fairly lustrous surfaces, this borderline Mint State piece is the second finest grade in the NGC census, after a single MS61. Ex.
