Republic silver Essai 5 Francs 1887 MS62 NGC, KM-XE3, VG-4064, Lec-36. An intriguing issue of French Guiana encountered at market only a handful of times in the last few decades and generally to significant collector enthusiasm. While NGC designates this issue as a fantasy more recently, minors from this same series curiously do not receive this treatment, the distinction likely originating from significantly rusted dies used to strike these issues, potentially at a later date. Regardless, the piece displays most appreciable appearances, benefitting from silhouettes of ochre and cerulean and a bold strike resulting in near-medallic features that project boldly towards the viewer.
