MYSIA. Cyzicus. Ca. 500-450 BC. EL stater (21mm, 16.18 gm). NGC XF 5/5 - 5/5. Hound pointing left, right fore-paw pointing forward, tail hooked and pointing forward; tunny fish left below / Quadripartite mill-sail incuse square punch. Greenwell 138. Von Fritze 93, pl. III, 12. Boston 1469. SNG von Aulock 119. Fairly centered strike on harvest yellow flan. An intriguing type with a nicely modeled hunting hound pointing at prey. Evidenced by coinage such as this piece, some modern canine breeds have parallels to early classical Grecian depictions. The hound on this coin, with its muscled body and triangular snout, closely resembles the bull terrier, although the modern breed was supposedly created in the 18th-19th centuries.
