Description

BITHYNIA. Calchedon. Ca. late 3rd century BC. AV stater (19mm, 8.48 gm, 10h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 4/5. Posthumous issue in the name and types of Lysimachus, ca. 205-195 BC. Diademed head of deified Alexander III right, with horn of Ammon / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛΥΣΙΜΑXOΥ, Athena seated left, Nike in right hand crowning royal name, resting left arm on grounded shield decorated with gorgoneion head boss, transverse spear beyond; MI in inner left field, bull charging left in exergue. Müller -, cf. 358-9 for similar type with bull in exergue (Uncertain Macedonian mint). Thompson -. Unrecorded variety. No examples in sales archives. Well-struck from beautiful style dies on matte surfaces with significant subdued luster.
