Kings of All England. Aethelstan Penny ND (924/5-939) AU55 NGC, Winchester mint, Raegenwulf as moneyer, Bust Crowned type, S-1095, N-675 (R), BMC (Anglo-Saxon II)-Unl., SCBI XXXIV (British Museum)-Unl., SCBI XLII (Southeastern)-778 (same reverse die), MEC VIII-Unl., Blunt, "The Coinage of Athelstan, 924-939. A Survey" (British Numismatic Journal Vol. 42 no. 6, 1974), 304. 1.62gm. +ÆĐELSTAN REX (S as retrograde Z), crowned, draped bust of Aethelstan right / +RÆGENVLF MO VVINCI (pellet in field below initial cross), small cross pattée. By all indications an exceptionally rare moneyer from this mint in Aethelstan's reign, altogether missing from Lockett and Stack collections, as well as from the holdings of the British Museum. Indeed, we have been able to locate just two others in the course of our research: one recorded by the Corpus of Early Medieval Coin Finds at the Fitzwilliam (EMC-1042.0778), and one sold by Baldwin's in their Auction 48 (September 2006, Lot 5011). Slightly glossy to the fields, the piece has been minted on a fully round planchet with superb detail to the bust and easily legible legends. Ex.
