Archbishops of Canterbury. Ceolnoth (833-870) Penny ND (c. 854-864) Chipped NGC, Canterbury mint, Biarnred as moneyer, Inscribed Cross type, S-894, N-245 (R), SCBI II (Hunterian)-Unl., SCBI IV (Copenhagen)-Unl., SCBI XX (Mack)-Unl., SCBI LXVII (British Museum)-809, MEC VIII-Unl., Naismith-C150e (this coin). 1.40gm. +CEOLNOĐ | ΛRCHIEP-, draped, tonsured bust of Ceolnoth facing, group of three pellets to either side / +BIARN | RED | MO arranged on limbs of beaded cross, N | E | T | A around. A superbly struck example of this early archiepiscopal coinage even given its minor chipping along the edge--hardly an unusual feature for these early pennies; indeed, the cracked portion almost perfectly follows the contour of the outer border, leading to no loss of detail from the neighboring legends. Significantly better-preserved than most, with Almost Unicirculated details. Ex. Sotheby's (January 1987, Lot 278); likely Thomas Bliss Collection (Sotheby's March 1916, Lot 49); likely Spink Numismatic Circular (January 1906, Item no. 23492); Purchased from the Montagu Collection by Dealer Verity; Montagu Collection (Sotheby's November 1895, Lot 322); William Brice Collection (purchased en bloc by Montagu in 1887); J.B. Bergne Collection (Sotheby's May 1873, Lot 112) From the Historical Scholar Collection
