Description

Marcus Aurelius, as Augustus (AD 161-180). AV aureus (19mm, 7.18 gm, 5h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5, marks. Rome, AD 163-164. M ANTONINVS-AVG ARMEN P M, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius right, seen from behind / TR P XVIII-COS III, Victory standing facing, head right, palm in right hand, fixing a shield to a palm tree with left. Calicó 1987a. RIC III 116. Although a legend on the shield seems to have been visibly removed from this die, RIC and Calicó make no mention of variations with a legend. Superbly struck with bold dimensionality. From the Historical Scholar Collection
