Julius Caesar, as Dictator Perpetuo (February-March 44 BC), with Publius Sepullius Macer, as Moneyer. AR denarius (18mm, 4.07 gm, 10h). NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5. Rome, February-March 44 BC. CAESAR-DICT•PERPETVO, wreathed head of Julius Caesar right / P•SEPVLLIVS / MACER, Venus Victrix standing facing, head left, Victory left in right hand, scepter set on star in left. Crawford 480/10. Sydenham 1073. Julia 48 and Sepullia 3. Wonderful even toning on a lustrous flan. From the Historical Scholar Collection. Ex Münzen & Medaillen AG Basel, Auction 93 (16 December 2003), lot 59; Acquired on 8 April 1909 from Dr. Eugen Merzbacher Nachf., Munich This series of coins containing the "DICT PERPETVO," or Dictator in Perpetuity, in conjunction with his lifetime portrait, is considered by historians as the coins that killed Caesar. Around a month after this legend was minted, Julius Caesar was assassinated by the Senate in the Theater of Pompey.
