Description

Hamburg. Free City Taler 1694-IR MS63 NGC, Hamburg mint, KM315, Dav-5374, Gaed-523. With the name and titles of Leopold I. A lavishly produced emission that significantly presses the upper bounds of its assigned designation, fielding dove-gray surface tone overlaid by a vibrant champagne luminescence. While a single technically finer specimen exists at PCGS (MS65), the quality of that specimen when compared with the present offering appears remarkably similar, with this piece generally showing milder evidence of haymarking and hardly a trace of any prominent die shifts. Certainly a coin whose aesthetic merits have been well-recognized, and will continue to come contested by the connoisseur. Ex. Millennia Collection (Goldberg Auction 46B, May 2008, Lot 610); Irving Goodman Collection (Goldberg Auction 15, June 2002, Lot 430) From the Cape Coral Collection of German Coins, Part I
